The Japanese manufacturer Sharp recently confirmed that they are working on a display for a next-generation gaming console. This is now fueling speculation that Sharp will supply the display for the next Nintendo console.

Like the US Economic Service Bloomberg reported yesterday, Sharp confirmed that it is working on LCD screens for an “upcoming game console” while announcing its latest business figures. According to CEO Robert Wu, Sharp intends to start test production for the display on newly set up production systems before the end of this year.

According to Wu, Sharp has been involved in the project since the beginning of the console manufacturer’s development phase. Of course, the manager did not name the console provider, but there is a high probability that it is the Japanese gaming giant Nintendo.

Sharp has long been a close partner of Nintendo when it comes to equipping the Japanese games company’s products with screens. The fact that Sharp wants to set up entire production lines just for the new display also speaks in favor of the fact that this is a large order.

New console could boost Nintendo sales again

Nintendo recently warned that sales of the hitherto enormously successful Switch have now passed their peak. The company only announced in the last few days that no new hardware announcements are planned for the rest of the year. A new Nintendo console can only be expected in 2024, while the number of units of the current switch variants will decrease significantly. For the current financial year, Nintendo only expects around 15 million Switch sales. The Switch is now six years old, although there are now two other variants with the Switch Lite and the OLED model introduced last year.

Sharp, meanwhile, may have “blundered” its announcement because since initial reports emerged of the company’s mention of a collaboration with a gaming equipment maker, it has deleted the relevant mention in an online presentation of its financial figures.

Summary

  • There’s a good chance it’s Nintendo.
  • Sharp sets up entire production lines for the display.
