The total sale of units of nintendoswitch it has already officially surpassed those of PlayStation 4, according to Nintendo’s latest earnings report.
This news was expected after some industry watchers reported that the Switch had eclipsed the flagship Game Boy in worldwide sales in early January.
Despite having a relatively thin catalog of launch titles, the Nintendo Switch has become a must-have console over the past six years.
Its unique hybrid design, combined with a steady influx of critically acclaimed exclusives, proved to be a winning formula for Nintendo, coming just in time to make up for the company’s lackluster Wii U generation.
Switch’s sustained success is illustrated by the fact that its lifetime sales reached 122.55 million units by the end of 2022, according to Nintendo financial data recently published.
For context, total PS4 sales currently stand at around 117 million units. Before this worldwide achievement, Nintendo Switch had already managed to outsell PS4 in the United States.
With this latest achievement, Nintendo Switch has become the third best-selling console of all time, just below Nintendo DS and PS2, whose lifetime sales amount to about 154 million and 158 million units, respectively.
Even more impressive is the fact that the Switch has achieved 120 million sales in less than six years, making it the fastest console to reach this figure.
