Noam Chomsky's wife denies death of linguist

NEW YORK.- The wife of Noam Chomsky, Valeria Wasserman Chomsky, said today -June 18- that reports that the famous linguist and activist had died are false.

Wife’s statement

“No, it is false,” he wrote in response to an emailed query from The Associated Press.

“Noam Chomsky, 95, is hospitalized in Brazil while recovering from a stroke suffered a year ago,” Valeria Chomsky told the AP last week. But the Beneficencia Portuguesa hospital in Sao Paulo said in a statement that Chomsky was discharged on Tuesday to continue his treatment at home.

However, this morning Chomsky was trending on X where false reports of his death.

The diaries Jacobin y The New Statesman published obituaries for Chomsky, although the first changed its headline from “We Remember Noam Chomsky” to “Let’s Celebrate Noam Chomsky.”

The New Statesman completely withdrew the essay by former Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis.

The Chomskys have lived in Brazil since 2015. Noam Chomsky, known to millions of people for his criticism of United States foreign policy, was a professor for decades at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2017, he joined the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Arizona in Tucson.
