North Miami deacon and teacher indicted on new charges of sexual abuse of students

A deacon and teacher at a Catholic school in North Miami who was arrested last month after being accused of sexually abusing two students faces more charges after the case of two other alleged victims came to light on Friday, police said.

Carlos Humberto Ramirez, 51, faces four new counts of lewd sexual abuse of a minor and lewd acts, Miami-Dade jail records showed. Ramírez had been arrested on May 31 on two similar charges.

Ramirez, from Miami Gardens, had worked as a teacher and deacon at Holy Family Catholic School in North Miami.

According to the arrest report, one of the new allegations involves an 8-year-old third-grader who said Ramirez touched her inappropriately over her clothing on three separate occasions beginning in October 2021.

Another student said Ramirez kissed her on the forehead and touched her breast over her clothing in October 2022, according to an arrest report.

The previous cases, according to the arrest report, occurred in March during a Spanish class. An 11-year-old student was turning in her class work when Ramírez grabbed her around the waist and then squeezed her behind, the report said.

Although he was able to leave the class without any problem, another student who witnessed the first student being grabbed experienced a similar situation, according to the authorities’ report.

The second student, a 12-year-old girl, said Ramirez moved her in front of him as he grabbed her from behind and squeezed twice under her skirt.

Ramírez is also accused of kissing her on the cheek, according to the arrest report.

When questioned by police, Ramirez denied the accusations, but was still arrested and booked into the Miami-Dade County TGK Jail.

The Archdiocese of Miami ruled on this case in May and sent a statement stating that “three months ago, an allegation of inappropriate behavior was received, involving Deacon Carlos Ramírez, a teacher at Holy Family Catholic School, in North Miami. Following these allegations, Deacon Ramirez was placed on administrative leave, and North Miami police were notified, beginning an investigation.”

During these weeks, the school and the archdiocese have cooperated with the police investigation.

“These have been difficult days for the students, teachers and administrators of Holy Family School and the parish, and our prayers are with all those involved,” the statement added.
