The Last of Us has finally started in series form and was able to convince viewers and critics worldwide. The HBO series based on the cult video game from Naughty Dog attracted 4.7 million viewers with the very first episode alone, almost beating House of the Dragon’s internal record. The special thing that probably tempted HBO to announce season two so soon after the start of the first season: The second episode was able to attract even more viewers, which is actually an exception for series. The vast majority of television programs lose ratings after the premiere episode. With such success, it’s no wonder that HBO is now officially doing what many saw coming: season two of The Last of Us is coming!

HBO confirms Season 2 of The Last of Us

After The Last of Us (buy now ) not only convinced viewers but also critics, it is no wonder that HBO has renewed the mushroom post-apocalypse for another season. The series still has a whopping 97% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

And that is also reflected in the number of viewers: While episode one attracted 4.7 million people to watch the screens, episode two increased again by almost 22% and gained 5.7 million viewers. The series almost surpassed the station’s internal record, which was only set last year with House of the Dragon.

When does The Last of Us season 2 start?

Although the second season of the post-apocalypse series around Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) has now been confirmed, it does not yet have a start date. Nevertheless, one can already speculate about when we might experience new adventures from the fungus-infested world:

In 2023, there is a very high probability that this will no longer be the case. The first season was already in production for a long time and is staged in a very high quality. Typically it could take a little longer. Something similar has already been seen in the last seasons of Game of Thrones or most recently in Stranger Things, the fourth season of which was three years away on Netflix.

Of course, in this example, the Covid 19 pandemic made things even more difficult. Still, we don’t expect Joel and Ellie to return until 2025. If we’re lucky, it will be something by the end of 2024, but you shouldn’t get your hopes up too high.

What’s next?

The first season of The Last of Us retells the events of the first video game from 2013. So it stands to reason that season two will revolve around the second game and trace the story of it. This is also indicated by Neil Druckman, one of the showrunners of the series and the person responsible for the games in a tweet:

Nevertheless, things could turn out differently. The second part of The Last of Us is quite extensive and could therefore be divided into several seasons. Or we don’t experience the events of the second game at all in season two, but a completely different story. After all, there are many years between The Last of Us Part I, which recently received a remake, and The Last of Us Part II.

So maybe a second season will tell a previously unknown story. Are you looking forward to The Last of Us season two and if so, what story would you like to see the show tell? Feel free to write that in the comments! You can find out how the first season continues here.
