Today the starting signal for the new Marvel blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 finally falls in Germany. Despite currently somewhat lower ratings, the MCU film is already on the road to success. Had things gone a little differently in the past, fans might even have a Guardians spin-off film get to see. At least director had James Gunn thought very specifically about such a project.

Spin-off film starring Marvel duo

In an interview with i09 magazine, James Gunn not only made general comments Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3but also to his Ideas around the entire trilogy. During the conversation, the director explained that he even briefly hatched the plan a spin-off film starring Rocket and Groot to produce.

“I always thought there would be a third movie. We had to tell the story of Peter Quill first and then move on to the story of Rocket. I think that raised the question of whether it could be made into a movie about Rocket and Groot or Guardians 3. Originally, I really wanted to make a film about Rocket and Groot.”

Unfortunately, as part of the interview, James Gunn didn’t explain exactly why he ultimately decided against this idea and made Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 instead.

If the ideas for a spin-off film with the mentioned duo will ever be implemented remains to be seen. #

However, since James Gunn is now responsible for the new DCEU, it should be quite unlikely.

This is how it continues in the MCU

With the theatrical release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the continuation of phase 5 of the MCU is on the agenda. The next movie is coming with The Marvels November 10, 2023 to the cinemas. In addition, the Marvel fans may in the course of this year look forward to several series, which will be exclusive to Disney Plus. Secret Invasion starts on June 21st, the second season of Loki is to follow a short time later.
