We previously reported on the upcoming remake of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch, and have already told you who has been chosen to play one half of the titular duo, namely Lilo. But as the casting process continues, Disney has now revealed who has been chosen to play Lilo’s older sister, Nani, and the decision has sparked debate and criticism from fans.

However, the criticism from the fans is not related to the actress in question, but more to Disney’s approach of mistakenly casting a person who reflects the real-life character’s skin color and heritage.

Namely, Sydney Agudong has been cast as Nani, and before we’ve even had an inkling of how well or badly she fits the role of Nani, fans via social media have already pointed out that the character from the animated films had a darker skin tone, a different hair color and other ethnic characteristics not reflected in the cast.

Some have even called the casting decision for “blatant colourism”which is an accusation that Disney and its feature film remakes have endured countless times before, with Naomi Scott’s role in Aladdin being a recent example.

What do you think of Agudong as Nani?
