Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 26, marks the 37th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. Despite the devastating event, the consequences of which can still be felt today, the nuclear danger in Europe has not yet been averted. Zaporizhia is repeatedly the target of Russian attacks and thus an enormous risk factor. The German Environmental Aid (DUH) calls for an immediate dismantling of German plants. Sascha Müller-Kraenner, DUH Federal Managing Director, comments:

“Especially in times of war and crisis, nuclear power is not a safe source of energy, but an additional and enormous risk factor. Europe’s largest nuclear power plant in Zaporizhia is still under regular military fire – 37 years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, which painfully proved how destructive nuclear power can be. The continued operation of Ukrainian nuclear power plants is more dangerous today than ever before. That is why it was right and overdue to finally take the remaining German nuclear power plants off the grid ten days ago. The dismantling of the plants must begin immediately in accordance with the provisions of the Atomic Energy Act. It’s bad enough that the remaining nuclear waste will affect 30,000 generations to come. There’s no way more of the hazardous waste can be produced. Finding a final repository for the nuclear industry’s bright legacy is difficult enough as it is.”
