The number of traffic accidents and fatalities in Brandenburg fell last year to the lowest level since 1992. According to information from Monday, the police counted 71,396 accidents and 112 fatalities. That was 1055 accidents or 1.5 percent fewer than in the previous year. 15 fewer people died, a drop of almost 12 percent.

The number of traffic deaths “reached the lowest value ever in Brandenburg,” said Interior Minister Michael Stübgen (CDU). In 1992, 876 people died in traffic accidents – that was an incredibly high number, even in a country comparison.

However, the number of people injured in traffic accidents rose by 479 or almost 5 percent to 10,538 in 2022. However, it is still below the value before the corona pandemic, said Stübgen. The most common cause of accidents was therefore too little distance (6846 accidents), followed by excessive speed (4866) and failure to give way (4344). Particularly striking is an increase in accidents involving alcohol by 13 percent to 1186. Most fatal traffic accidents were again out of town. (dpa)
