Mourning in the Catholic parish of St. Marien in Bochum-Langendreer: Deacon Hans Nowel has died. He leaves a big void.

The Catholic parish of St. Marien in Bochum-Langendreer mourns her Deacon Hans Nowel, who died at the age of 86. He has been a volunteer in the community for 30 years.

Farewell to Bochum deacon: “Engine of the community” has gone out

As a part-time deacon, Nowel was involved in the then parish of St. Thomas More in Langendreer and later in St. Bonifatius, according to an obituary from the pastoral team of the parish of Liebfrauen. “His friendly nature in particular was a gift that opened many hearts for him and quickly opened up contacts with the people around him.”

Hans Nowel shaped the Langendreer-Werne Kolping family as chairman and later as president. “He was omnipresent, the engine of the community,” says Martin Wiedemann from the Kolping Board. “Hans was always open to new ideas. We will miss him.”

Companion about Deacon Hans Nowel: “Disputable, but never resentful”

Nowel was definitely a “pugnacious, but never unforgiving” person and “always turned to people,” Wiedemann continues to report. He recently stepped down for health reasons. “But he was still on board, wanted to be informed about everything and continued to get involved,” says Martin Wiedemann, who, like Nowel, is active in the Kolping board, Caritas circle and parish council. “That’s why I see him as a good role model for me, but I’ll never be able to match it.”

Together, Nowel and Wiedemann opened the Caritas construction trailer in front of the Marien Church, where the team offers advice and help for people in the district.

Federal Cross of Merit for social commitment

In 2008, Hans Nowel was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit. According to the letter from the then Federal President Horst Köhler, he had “acquired outstanding merit through his decades of commitment in the social sector. Mayor Gaby Schäfer (SPD) was honored at the time.

Nowel was particularly concerned to “strengthen the inner cohesion of young families and cross-family cohesion”. This was further highlighted. He led the gymnastics group in the Kolping Family, organized hikes and bowling competitions and thus strengthened the feeling of togetherness. Furthermore, Nowel advertised for Misereor and Adveniat and had “significant influence on the renovation and rehabilitation of the Marienkirche and on the redesign of the church square”.
