On April 5, 2023, the federal cabinet passed the draft of a care support and relief law. The representative of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group for the participation of people with disabilities, Wilfried Oellers, explains:
“Caring relatives deserve our support. They do a great service for our society. It is not uncommon for them to help people in need of care, often with a disability and many of them children, under great personal, professional and health deprivation.
For these relatives, the government’s draft of the traffic light for the care support and relief law turns out to be false labeling and a great disappointment. Because the relief budget still contained in the draft bill – the common annual amount for preventive and short-term care – has been quietly and secretly deleted from the traffic light.
In our position paper ‘Remove barriers – create awareness – ensure participation’, which we adopted last autumn, we as the Union faction expressly committed ourselves to the relief budget. We are also calling for the creation of more short-term care places in order to give caring relatives more flexibility and also some rest periods.
We therefore urgently call on the traffic light groups to include the relief budget in the parliamentary procedure in the law.”
