The DC Extended Universe has seen ebbs and flows at the worldwide box office. Blockbusters such as Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018) proved to be crowd pullers, films such as Birds of Prey (2020) and Black Adam (2022) were mild breezes on the big screen. At the latest after the disappointment with the superhero debut of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, it was clear to those responsible at Warner: A reboot was needed! This should succeed under the aegis of filmmaker James Gunn (Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy). Until then, the DCEU will record one another low point.

Huge flop: This superhero didn’t deserve that

Captain Marvel you could easily go with Captain Marvel confused – at least by name. I’m sorry, what? There is one Captain Marvel in the MCU, portrayed by Oscar winner Brie Larson. And there is one Captain Marvel at the competitor DC, the Zachary Levy is embodied and with the help of the magic word Shazam! transformed from a teenager into a superhero.

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel managed to just break the magic barrier of one billion US dollars at the worldwide box office. In comparison, the second part of Shazam turned out to be an absolute disaster after an already meager start. The film flopped brutally at the box office and the actually so likeable superhero experienced a crash landing, for which even the director of the film only had mockery and gallows humor left.

The days of Shazam! Fury of the Gods on the big screen are officially numbered. The exploitation of the superhero film at the box office recently ended. The result is sobering. Worldwide, the successor of Shazam! just $133.4 million import. For comparison: The Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania from competitor Marvel, which was traded as a flop, at least came up $475.7 million.

With this catastrophic box office result, it is clear that Shazam! Fury of the Gods is the biggest flop of the DC Extended Universe to date. And you can’t really blame the film for that. It offers pleasantly crisp popcorn cinema and pleasing superhero action. Not a masterpiece, but one successful distraction from everyday life. The announcement that the DC universe would undergo a comprehensive reboot also spelled the death knell for Shazam 2. This will happen with The Flash (June 15), Blue Beetle (August 18) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (December 20). dying DCEU will be represented on the big screen three more times. However, it is questionable whether one of these cinema films will undercut the box office of Shazam 2 again.
