Osnabruck. Olaf Zimmermann, Managing Director of the German Cultural Council, calls for a change of course in culture. “Culture makers have to ask themselves whether the idea of growth is really good. The pandemic has already confronted us with a very frightening experience. We have to learn from this for culture,” said Zimmermann in an interview with the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (NOZ). and added: “I think we have to look much more at the independent scene than just at the big cultural institutions.”
At the same time, Olaf Zimmermann refers to the experiences of the Corona crisis. The cultural sector has proven to be vulnerable. “The Corona crisis has shown us that the cultural sector is very fragmented and creative, but also extremely vulnerable. We have to build structures into this fragmentation that can help cushion future crises,” appealed Zimmermann. At the same time, he called for a new community of responsibility for cultural institutions. “The many culture makers must be better protected. The big culture houses also have a responsibility for the independent scene. They belong together,” Zimmermann asked for a change of perspective.
At the same time, according to him, the Corona period has also proven the relevance of culture as an experience. “The experiences of the Corona crisis have shown above all that digital cultural experiences are not enough. People want an immediate cultural experience,” said Zimmermann. This experience cannot be replaced by digital offers. “Many saw the digital as a lifeline for culture. But that doesn’t last in the long run. Analogue cultural events remain central,” concludes Zimmermann.
