This curious trend appeared on the social network and the hashtag #mirrorrreflection reached 86 million views.

Mirror, my beautiful mirror. On TikTok, Internet users have seen a surprising trend appear on their application: filming an object hidden behind a sheet of paper and being surprised that this same object is visible in the mirror.

“Can someone explain to me how is this possible?”, “Can someone explain how the mirror knows there is a hidden object?”, “How can a mirror see behind an object opaque?”. So many questions that accompany the videos published by the thousands on TikTok for a few days.

Irony or real questioning, American users have become passionate about this issue. And the number of views is piling up, over 86 million for the #mirrrorreflection hashtag. And 1.7 million views for the French equivalent.

And the formula works to accumulate views. More than 5 million views and 9000 comments in four days for this german userwho is more used to beauty tutorials than the laws of physics.

Below the videos, the mocking comments are going well: “you didn’t take physics lessons at school you”, “yes, it’s the principle of a mirror” or even “TikTok makes me lose faith in humanity”.

A very rational explanation

However, videos and diagrams flourish to explain this scientific phenomenon.

It is indeed an optical illusion created by the reflection. Thus, the light is reflected on the object, reaches the mirror and bounces in the field of vision.

“The fact that so many people are scared and wonder about this phenomenon terrifies me”, reacts this creator of scientific contents.
