Former President Donald Trump is the first US president to be charged with criminal offenses after leaving office; not just once but four times in a matter of months.
On Monday, a Georgia special jury indicted Trump for allegedly trying to rig the results of the 2020 election in that state, where Democrat Joe Biden won by a narrow margin.
Trump was charged along with 18 other people. Among those charged with the former president are his former personal lawyer and former New York mayor, Rudy Giuliani, and his former chief of staff Mark Meadows, among others.
According to the nearly 100-page charging document, the former president faces 13 charges, including soliciting a public official to violate his oath or conspiring to impersonate a public official.
But the main charge on which the indictment rests, and which all defendants face, is that of violating the law against corrupt Georgia organizations, and which, if confirmed, requires a prison sentence to be served.
In a press conference after the news was made public, the prosecutor in charge of the case, Fani Willisexplained that the grand jury made its decision after learning the information collected for two and a half years by the prosecutors in charge of the investigation.
The Department of Justice has not confirmed any new charges at this time.
The prosecutor said that her intention is for the trial to begin in about six months, that is, in February 2024, in the middle of the primary elections. Trump pleaded not guilty to the crimes.
This was the fourth charge faced by the former president.
FALSE STATEMENTS
The third is related to his intention to reverse the election result in 2020 and his alleged dissemination of false statements in connection with the election result which somehow climaxed with the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Special Counsel Jack Smith accuses him of four counts related to conspiracy, witness tampering and obstruction of a legal proceeding.
The prosecutor believes that Trump made those statements – that he had won the elections – knowing that they were false.

“But the defendant repeated and widely disseminated them to make his knowingly false claims appear legitimate, to create a national atmosphere of mistrust and anger, and to erode public faith in the election administration,” the prosecutor said.
The prosecutor has proposed as the trial start date January 2, 2024, two weeks before the start of the Iowa primary.
DOCUMENT RETENTION
The second criminal charge facing Trump is related to the retention of classified documents at your residence in Mar-a-Lago in Florida.
The former president was charged with 37 charges for withholding the documents that he took to his residence after leaving the White House in January 2021.

To the initial charges, prosecutor Jack Smith, who is also presiding over the case on the false statements, added three more crimes related to the former president’s attempts to delete images from the security camera at the mansion in Florida after he received a summons to exhibit them.
The agents who raided Trump’s residence found 48 boxes with documents, of which a hundred were classified and about 30 contained information on national defense affairs.
Judge Aileen Cannon set May 20, 2024 as the date to start the trial.
PAYMENTS TO PORN ACTRESS
A special jury filed 34 criminal charges against Trump in the first week of April related to paying money to stormy daniels for the alleged extramarital relationship during the 2016 electoral campaign that deposited him in the White House.
According to New York prosecutor Alvin Bragg, Trump broke election fundraising laws by paying the porn actress $130,000 to silence her and prevent her from hindering his campaign.
He allegedly received bribes to hush up an extramarital affair with Trump.
Trump pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial is scheduled to begin on March 25, 2024.
The 91 charges Trump faces in the four criminal cases carry years in prison — from one to 20 years — if convicted in any of them.
