According to Kyodo, the national weather authority provisionally gave the strength as 6.5. The earthquake occurred at a depth of twelve kilometers. A tsunami warning was not issued. In the city of Suzu, an elderly man fell from a ladder due to the tremors. He was later pronounced dead.

The quake coincided with “Golden Week,” a series of national holidays when millions of Japanese people travel. According to Kyodo, there were longer queues at the train station in the prefectural capital Kanazawa due to the interruption of train connections and delays.
