One man killed, another wounded in park shooting

A 74-year-old man was killed and a 44-year-old man was injured after being shot in the back, according to police reports.

The incident occurred Friday morning in Tompkins Square Park, at Avenue A and 7th Street in the East Village. It is not known if the people involved knew each other or the motive for the shooting.

The victims were taken to Bellevue Hospital, where the elderly man was pronounced dead.

The 44-year-old man is in stable condition.

“It’s something that happens again, unfortunately. It’s not surprising. Once or twice a week, some kind of nonsense happens,” said a neighbor at the park.

A man was charged in April in connection with two separate shootings in Tompkins Square Park that occurred in March and seriously injured two people.

“This doesn’t make you feel safe. This is my neighborhood and I wander the streets quite often,” another resident said, as quoted by NY1.

There are no arrests at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
