Amazon Prime is preparing to welcome a disaster film like Hollywood knows how to produce. Even if the last attempts are not resounding successes, the feature film which tumbles like a meteorite could well create a surprise. While we shouldn’t expect a groundbreaking show, Gerard Butler’s latest project tries a different approach.
Entitled Greeland: The Last Refuge, this film has just landed on the Spanish service of Amazon Prime and could soon land with us. The plot tells how a struggling couple (John and Allison Garrity) hides the situation from their diabetic son Nathan. While the family is torn apart little by little, the information announces the arrival of an interstellar comet which will approach very close to the Earth. It is made up of thousands of fragments and one of them hits the city of Tampa hard. The colossal shock wave is felt thousands of kilometers away. The problem ? The thousands of remaining fragments will collide with the planet and John Garrity is selected to join a fallout shelter. But while his family is at the military base, ready to board, John learns that he will have to leave alone because of his son’s diabetes. He will then fight to reach the last refuge of humanity, Greenland.
This film echoes a film like 2012 a bit, but it has a very different reading. If the spectacular moments are in the game, the feature film relies above all on the psychology of the characters to tell the events.
The last cradle of humanity
On the critical side, the intimate approach of the film rather seduced. While some considered him very American in spirit, many praised his audacity compared to his peers. With 60 million dollars in revenue, Greeland: The Last Refuge is an effective feature film, but which has not been profitable. By its style, it deserves that we dwell on it and it is true that we are attached to the destiny of the Garrity family. It remains to be seen whether the film will arrive on Amazon Prime soon, but its presence on the Spanish service suggests that it will soon be the case.
