For the non-connoisseurs, it is with this sentence that the work of Eichiro Oda begins, pronounced by Gol D. Roger the king of the pirates at the time of his execution. The golden age of piracy begins with the latter. We can say One Piece would not exist without him, without this line, none of the pirates known in the work would have gone to sea, especially our main character. One Piece tells us the story of Monkey D. Luffy. This young pirate decides to go to sea after hearing about the adventures of Shanks Le Roux, a pirate he knew when he was a child. Very quickly the story of the manga becomes the story of a world, of an entire universe. Throughout his journey, our protagonist meets friends and adversaries that he will have to defeat in order to move forward. He discovers a vast, complex world with its own rules, its own powers, its mysteries to solve. Our hero will fail, he will win, fall down, get up, etc. You might think we are dealing with a classic Shonen, but not at all. The strength of One Piece is its richness and its colorful side. It allows its author to talk about freedom as a whole as well as racism or discrimination with the story of the Fish-Men and the Celestial Dragons. For example, the history of the Wa country refers directly to the history of Japan. Even on the length Eichiro Oda manages to remain fair and coherent, he manages to make us cry by presenting us with a character who disguises himself as a baby, he manages to make a character who uses the cookie as his main weapon classy. With an overflowing imagination, One Piece is a long work, but it is this unprecedented imagination, its richness, its length which is the real strength of this manga. Want more detail? At the time these lines are written, One Piece is 26 years of history, 105 volumes released in Japan (volume 104 will be released on April 19 in France). With 1074 chapters there are approximately 21,000 pages, 1050 anime episodes, which corresponds to nearly 25,200 minutes, or 420 hours, so 18 days of viewing in a row. Half a billion copies sold worldwide, 15 feature films, a live series in development by Netflix and which should be released this year. It’s the most printed book series in the world and every episode and chapter rocks the entire internet. By-products galore whether in Japan or Europe. a community always determined to cosplay their favorite character or sing We Are, the very first opening of the anime, at each event.
