70 grams of rice and 70 grams of beans per day. THIS is the contractually agreed food ration for the campers at “ I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!“ Not much more than a cup of food!

There are also some vegetables and occasionally a piece of meat. But only if the Candidates are successful in the jungle test and diligently collect stars for themselves and their fellow players. Otherwise your stomach will growl.

The most noticeable effect on the bush residents is weight loss. It is not uncommon for the VIPs to lose almost ten kilos in just under two weeks of camp.

But is that actually healthy? Here you can read all about the undesirable effects of the rice and bean diet – and how to recognize symptoms of malnutrition.

How the jungle campers feed themselves

All candidates know in advance that there is no sumptuous five-star food in the jungle camp. And, understandably, they are usually not very enthusiastic about their everyday mealtimes.

Especially when candidates in the daily disgust exams don’t get any stars and there is therefore no extra food either, nutrition in the Australian bush becomes tight.

However, such a strong weight loss is not surprising. Rice and beans together only have a calorific value of around 500 kilocalories. But: The energy requirement for a woman is 2200 calories a day, for men it is 2500 calories.

So there is far too little to eat in the jungle camp. This can have long-term health consequences.

What is happening in the body?

In the small amount of rice and beans there is hardly anything nutritious apart from carbohydrates, a few vitamins and minerals and fiber.

So please don’t try this at home in order to lose a lot of weight as quickly as possible!

As a healthy person, you can stick to the rice and beans diet for a few days without serious consequences. For a long time or for older candidates, this can be really dangerous.

Because: After one to two weeks, there is a protein deficiency. What could prevent this in the jungle participants is only hearty snacking on the protein-rich insects in the disgust tests.

Means: eat a lot of maggots, ants and kangaroo penises! And that’s exactly what most people can’t do because of their reluctance.

Older candidates are generally at higher risk for rice and beans. As you get older, you have less muscle. The body breaks them down first on a heavy diet.

The most serious consequence is physical weakness, which is also dangerous for mental mobility.

You don’t have to worry about the jungle candidates, because they are under medical observation and receive medical care in an emergency. But one must also say very clearly: the one-sided diet with rice and beans is not suitable for copying.

By the way: The effects of malnutrition would be really severe if the jungle camp were extended to six weeks. Then the candidates are threatened with hair loss, brittle fingernails, the onset of osteoporosis and severe circulatory problems.

What the forced diet does to the soul

After a certain time, it leads to the release of stress hormones.

Over time, the jungle campers increasingly lack vital substances such as iodine (important for thyroid function), iron (for red blood cells), calcium, vitamin D and zinc. The consequences: lethargy and a bad mood.

In the long term, the campers build up an enormous potential for aggression due to the little and one-sided food. The starving person tries to rise up against malnutrition and ensure that more and better food comes – which just doesn’t work there.

So it’s no wonder that the jungle dwellers talk a lot about food, increasingly arguing and getting angry. The nerves are raw.

You are simply HUNGRY!
