The fire brigade responded to a fire in downtown Bochum on Friday evening. One resident had to be taken to the hospital.

The resident of an apartment on Massenbergstrasse in downtown Bochum alerted the fire brigade on Friday evening. At around 10:15 p.m. he reported to the control center that the fuses in his apartment had blown and the apartment was now slightly smoked. The control center instructed the caller to leave the apartment immediately.

The emergency services moved out with several vehicles. “When the responsible fire engine from Fire and Rescue Station 2 arrived at the scene, flames and heavy smoke in the apartment could be seen through the windows,” said the Bochum fire brigade.

Fire brigade: The cause of the fire was probably a battery

The caller had gone outside as told. Several firefighting crews entered the building and took another person outside. All other apartments were empty, according to the fire department. The two residents were examined by rescue workers, and the caller was taken to the hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.

“The fire was quickly extinguished and it was prevented from spreading to the entire apartment,” the emergency services said. “The cause of the fire was probably a battery that self-ignited.” After the end of the extinguishing work, the fire apartment and the stairwell were ventilated with a high-performance fan. The public utilities switched off the gas and electricity supply to the apartment. This is uninhabitable for the time being.

For the fire department, the operation ended around 11:30 p.m. The police have taken over the investigation into the cause of the fire.
