The trigger was probably the lowering of her mother’s coffin, but perhaps also the encounter with her aunt Hanni,
but perhaps there was already a slate in Valerie’s skin that had become inflamed and made it possible for her to speak.
“Or a slate in the trunk” is a play developed within the framework of the cosmodrome, created from the cooperation between author, director and actors. The template, the prose text “Cut to Birds or a Slate in the Trunk” by Raoul Eisele, revolves around the life of the character Valerie. In the stage version, she meets her aunt Hanni at her mother’s funeral. The encounter between the two women tells of severity, of narratives and opinions that have been lived out, of longing, but also of grief and the question: what happens when a person leaves but not everything has been said yet? In a human, absurd and also cynical way, the piece shows the possibilities of dealing with it.
