An ordinance not yet approved could make downtown Miami look like New York’s iconic Times Square.
The proposed ordinance would change the City Code in a way that would allow dozens of 10,000-square-foot ultra-bright LED billboards to appear overnight in downtown.
Commissioner Manolo Reyes opposes it when he says “I don’t want this to be a Times Square in Miami, we have to have some control.”
While Joe Carollo is undecided on the ordinance, saying, “I’m not happy with what I’m seeing, I doubt I’m going to vote for that ordinance.”
And the dilemma is in the ability to generate money for the city. Several residents have signed a petition against the ordinance, claiming that these gigantic lights would directly affect the quality of life for downtown residents.
Sabina Covo also opposes the ordinance: “I am against the way in which the legislature is presenting itself in reference to the Billboards. It brings a lot of energy pollution to the city center.”
The decision will be made at the next town hall meeting, scheduled for September 23.
