Oscar Academy launches campaign to raise USD 500 million

LOS ANGELES.- The Academia of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences launched today -May 10- a campaign collection for the centenary of the awards scar with the goal of reaching 500 million dollars.

Named Academy100, ahead of the anniversary that will be celebrated in 2028, the initiative seeks to diversify the finances of the group, which plays a key role in sponsoring new filmmakers and preserving films, in addition to being in charge of the annual Academy Awards ceremony.

The campaign comes as the lavish gala sees a decline in viewers and with its lucrative broadcast deal with the US network ABC about to end.

Support base for scars

“The Academy will soon enter its second century, and we want to ensure that we continue to lead our international film community,” Bill Kramer, the Academy’s chief executive, said in a statement.

“As in all healthy organizations, the Academy needs a diverse and sustainable support base,” he added.

According to the Academy, sponsors have already committed more than $100 million to the campaign.

The Academy is made up of some 10,000 members, invited to participate in the community based on their achievements in film, from directors to producers, acting stars and visual effects artists.

The membership has become more international and diverse in recent times.

“Academy100 seeks to increase the Academy’s reach and global impact,” Kramer said.

The group launched the Academy Museum in Los Angeles in 2021. But viewership for the Oscars, despite rising recently, remains at historic lows.

Some 21 million people tuned in to the show this year to see how Oppenheimer dethroned popular rivals such as Barbie to win the award for Best Film. A decade ago, the gala brought together some 40 million people in front of televisions.
