The high temperatures can be deceiving, but it is already autumn, the period of the year when the coldest days and drier air begin. This combination generates a series of health problems, which especially affect the throat, ear and nose. With regard to children and the elderly, care must be taken.

Often, infections are similar and therefore bring questions about symptoms and which treatments to follow. For this, the doctor Lucas Sampaio, affiliated to the Brazilian Association of Otorhinolaryngology and Cervico-Facial Surgery (ABORL-CCF), clarifies how to differentiate some of these diseases — such as, for example, otitis media, sinusitis and allergic rhinitis.

Otitis media usually appears during autumn and winter, preferably in children who have a cold, the flu, or a respiratory or throat infection. “The organism is more fragile and, therefore, these bacteria and viruses that reside in the airways move to the middle ear and proliferate”, explains the doctor.
