And when was the last time you cried in the cinema? Arthur Haake and Hans Krestel say almost in unison in the Belgian boy-friendship drama “Close”. The whole room sniffled, remembers Krestel, one of several of the seven reader judges who have a Yorck cinema subscription.

They are all film aficionados with a penchant for the big screen. The 2022 high school graduate Haacke, who saw “Generation” films at the Berlinale as a child, the art mediator Krestel, as well as the doctor Irmela Schuller, who today supports young people with a migration background, or the media scientist Laura Klemens, currently at the Hasso Plattner Foundation active.

Jacqueline Blösch, who has worked in fashion shops, libraries and museums, among other things, talks about her huge DVD collection during the warm-up in the Tagesspiegel building, and Detlev Müller, who recently retired from the Hartnack School, calls his Yorck cinema subscription a play Life quality.

1626

minutes of film is what our reader jury sees at the festival. At least.

The 26-year-old philosophy student Vincent Kelany, who is one of Berlin’s passionate Sneak Previev fans, reveals that he is currently busy with the post-production of his first short film, which he made with a friend.

All 16 films in the Encounters section will see the seven through February 25th, documentaries, feature films and everything in between. Festival boss Carlo Chatrian and programmer Mark Peranson came especially to the warm-up to arouse the curiosity of the jurors – with a quick run through the Encounters program.

The section is not the second competition alongside the bear race, says Chatrian, but above all a different competition with more personal, innovative imagery from independent filmmakers.

On February 24, they will then put their heads together, deal with what they have seen and choose their winning film. It will be announced around noon on Saturday, February 25, during the award ceremony of the independent juries. Until then, we bet, the seven have not only watched 1626 minutes of Encounters films, but also spent a few hours in the other rows of the Galaxie Berlinale. Such a jury accreditation makes it possible.
