Blizzard had made an appointment with players yesterday to present the future of Overwatch 2. If a roadmap with new content has been presented, the studio has above all confirmed the cancellation of the long-awaited “campaign” mode, promised for a long time at the announcement of the game.

Campaign mode is canceled

Aaron Keller and Jared Neuss, Game Director and Executive Producer respectively, announced the news. The two men explain that they chose to prioritize the game service experience, and that the work carried out on PvE had not made it possible to reach the desired level of quality, pushing the teams to cancel the content initially shown in 2019 :

The team has created a bunch of amazing content: really exciting awesome missions, super fun new enemies to fight and really awesome hero skills… But unfortunately, the effort to bring it all together in a game-level experience Blizzard quality is huge

With everything we’ve learned about what it takes to make this game perform at the level you deserve, it’s clear we can’t deliver on that original vision for PvE that was shown in 2019. We won’t be offering a dedicated “Hero Mode”, with talent trees, long-term progression… those things are no longer part of our plans. And we know that’s going to disappoint a lot of you, so that’s why we wanted to talk about it before we talk about the roadmap, and to be completely honest, it’s been difficult for a lot of people who have invested their bodies and soul in there.

Instead of offering this big PvE experience, the studio plans to release various cooperative experiences, in the form of events, within its service game model:

We’re kicking off our first major story-based event with a new series of missions and it will kick off a new story arc for Overwatch.

The roadmap unveiled

If it is still quite difficult for the moment to really imagine the PvE content that will be offered in Overwatch 2, the new roadmap allows you to discover all the content planned for the next seasons.

The least we can is that it is very busy and that fans of the license should find their account there.

Remember that Overwatch 2 is available now on Xbox Series X | S, Nintendo Switch, PC and PS5. You can find below the full live broadcast yesterday.
