Since he was a teenager, Ovidio has been associated with the cartel. US prosecutors reported that in April 2008 he and his brothers conspired to distribute cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Likewise, in 2012 the US Office of Asset Control (OFAC) included his data on the list of people with whom financial operations should not be carried out, due to his relationship with Joaquín Guzmán Loera.

During his father’s hearing in New York in 2019, “El Ratón” was mentioned as one of the strategists in the escape of “El Chapo” from the El Altiplano prison in the State of Mexico in July 2015.

After the arrest and extradition of his father to a high security prison in the United States where he faces life sentence, Ovidio Guzmán rose through the ranks in the criminal organization and is currently classified as one of the high command.

Guzmán López, along with his brothers Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar and Joaquín Guzmán López —better known as “Los Chapitos”— are wanted by the US State Department and their whereabouts have a reward of five million dollars.

“El Ratón” faces charges for drug trafficking, in addition to being responsible for the events that occurred in “Culiacanazo”. Similarly, US authorities affirm that the alleged criminal ordered the murder of a Mexican singer, informants and a drug trafficker.

Sinaloa cartel, the most important in drug trafficking

The Sinaloa cartel is considered one of the most important drug trafficking organizations in Mexico and the Western Hemisphere.

Despite losing two of its main capos—Joaquín Guzmán Loera and Ovidio Guzmán—the cartel continues to be described as the most important narcotics trafficking organization in the West.
