Panasonic has lifted the veil on its flagship TV model for 2023. Its bright peak should make it a benchmark.

Like every year, Panasonic takes advantage of CES to unveil the reference model of its TV catalog. After last year’s LZ2000, make way for the MZ2000 of 2023, an OLED panel of course, but on which the Japanese manufacturer intends to add its paw. Panasonic’s new premium television will be available in three diagonal sizes, which should give the following references: TX-55MZ2000, TX-65MZ2000 and TX-77MZ2000.

Strangely, it is the two smallest diagonals of this new trio that will be the most interesting. And for good reason, they will be the only ones to embed the technology supposed to tip the OLED into a new era of brightness, the MLA. The 77-inch TV will not have this process and is therefore much closer in performance to last year’s model. So be careful when purchasing. On the other hand, there is a lot to be said for the lower diagonals. Indeed, the addition of MLA technology, the same that equips the new LG panels would significantly increase the light peak of these OLEDs.

MLA, the keystone of OLED?

As a reminder, the LMA (Micro Lenses Array) is a process based on convex microlenses which allow a greater part of the light produced by the diodes to be redirected towards the outside of the television, i.e. the screen. . The addition of this new layer makes it possible to reduce the loss of light, but above all to better channel it and to significantly increase the light peak, which is the challenge of current OLED panels. According to the manufacturer, the MLA would make it possible to reach 1,500 nits, which is a particularly high value for a panel of this type.

For the rest, the new MZ2000 relies quite heavily on last year’s LZ2000, a particularly successful model it is true. The OLED is therefore based on the HCX Pro AI processor which is based on machine learning to adapt the quality of the image in real time, but which also plays on the sound to adjust the audio quality of the sound bar composed of 16 speakers at the base of the TV (the same as on the LZ2000).

Complete on HDR, progressing on the game

One of the strengths of the Japanese manufacturer, which we find again this year, is knowing how to deal with all the HDR technologies on the market. Thus, the MZ2000 is compatible with HDR10+, HDR, Dolby Vision, HLG and HDR Photo. Given the image quality produced by Panasonic so far, this is a major guarantee insofar as it offers its owner the guarantee of sublimating all HDR content regardless of their distribution platform.

Finally, in a movement initiated last year, Panasonic finally seems to have tackled the game seriously. Of course, the MZ2000 is HDMI 2.1 compatible (ALLM and VRR and eARC), but the manufacturer seems to have finally made the effort to lower its input lag at 11 ms. It also adds AMD FreeSync Premium and G-Sync (nVidia) compatibility. Finally, its game mode, the Game Control Board is improving to offer more customization options to players.

On the interface side, Panasonic continues to rely on its home solution, My Home screen in version 8.0. So far, this choice has not seemed particularly relevant to us, in particular because of the absence of certain major applications. Nevertheless, the manufacturer promises progress and new features on the OS with a My Scenary customization option and a redesigned overall presentation. The Panasonic LZ2000 will arrive on the market in the spring of 2023, its price is not yet known but it should be very close to the prices charged on last year’s model.
