Parliamentary elections are taking place in Slovakia on Saturday, AFP reports. Voting started at 7 local time (05.00 GMT) and will close at 22.00 (20.00 GMT), and shortly after that the figures of the first exit polls will be published, according to Agerpres.

The result will probably be close, but certainly very important for the country’s foreign policy, especially in terms of support for Ukraine.

Slovakia has about 5.4 million inhabitants, is a member of the European Union and NATO.

In the pre-election polls, the social-democratic SMER party of former Prime Minister Robert Fico is the best placed. He promised that, if he wins the elections, he will no longer deliver weapons and ammunition to Ukraine.

For the Slovaks, however, the internal problems are important first of all: the 10% inflation, the highest in the EU, and the financing of the health system.
