Peaky Blinders in an anti-gay campaign: the creator of the series is furious

“We do not support or endorse the narrative of the video…”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis would love to be the Republican candidate for the next US President and for that he is campaigning to the extremes, touting in a recent video his anti-LGBTQ laws for Florida which have even resulted in a war with Disney.

In this video posted on his social networks but since deleted, his team took up striking images of pop-culture, including a glimpse of Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders. Furious to be associated with this homophobic sequence, the creator of the series Steven Knight and all the producers posted a message on Twitter to mark their opposition to Ron DeSantis:

“We confirm that the Tommy Shelby character imagery used in this campaign video posted by Ron DeSantis has been embedded without official license permission. We do not support or endorse the narrative of the video and strongly disapprove of it. use of the content in this way.”

DeSantis’ video concretely presents Donald Trump – his rival for the Republican nomination – as not being sufficiently opposed to the LGBTQ community. The clip is embellished with images of Christian Bale in the skin of the killer Patrick Bateman in American Psycho or of Cilian Murphy in that of the gangster Tommy Shelby in Peaky Blinders
