It’s barely four weeks since the The Last of Us series began by PlayStation Productions and HBO Max, but it is already considered one of the best video game adaptations and has generated a lot of expectations about other adaptations. Last night Peter Pascal showed up at Saturday night Live and he starred us in a fun sketch that imagines an adaptation of Mario Kart in the style of The Last of Us.
Fake trailers for live-action video game adaptations are not a new thing, as we still remember the one that IGN presented about The Legend of Zelda many years ago and fans are getting better at their creations. Still, no one had done what Saturday Night Live did with their skit that imagines a Mario Kart-style adaptation of The Last of Usstarring Pedro Pascal.
The “HBO Mario Kart Trailer” sketch was posted on the official Saturday Night Live YouTube channel and lasts just over three minutes. The sketch is presented as a trailer for a new HBO show, which after the success of The Last of Us is looking to adapt another video game as a dystopian drama. On this occasion, the selected video game is Mario Kart, with Pedro Pascal in the role of Mario.
The “plot” of the adaptation of Mario Kart type The Last of Us shows us the mushroom kingdom a decade after it has fallen, with Pedro Pascal as Mario with the mission of taking Princess Peach to the Rainbow Road. The trailer is full of Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros. easter eggs, plus it shows off new versions of Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi.
The same trailer acknowledges that this would not be the way to adapt Mario Kart to live-action, as the fictional reviews from Variety and The New York Times point out, but it still presents us with very funny chase scenes that make for a good tribute. The trailer even imagines “realistic” versions of objects like the banana peel and red shell.
Remember that today the fourth episode of The Last of Us series is released on HBO Max and in April we will see the premiere of the Super Mario Bros. movie, where we will surely see many Easter eggs to Mario Kart, as we saw in one of the trailers.
