The Peruvian Foreign Ministry issued a statement stating that “there has been no contempt on the part of the State.” Likewise, he indicated that he will present a detailed report with the arguments that support the government’s position, complying with the deadline established by the Inter-American Court, which expires on March 4, 2024.
On December 6, the Inter-American Court had asked Peru not to release Fujimori until the pardon granted by the Peruvian justice system was evaluated. considering his advanced age and health problems. Despite this request, the Peruvian government defended the legality of the measure that restored the pardon granted in 2017.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintained that the sentences related to the case have been executed in accordance with the parameters of the international instruments to which Peru is a party. In addition, he reaffirmed the country’s respect for the treaties and decisions of the system for the promotion and protection of human rights.
It should be remembered that Fujimori, sentenced to 25 years for crimes against humanity in 2009, left prison the same day that the Inter-American Court requested to postpone his release due to his health problems.
