The Bloomberg Philanthropies program is supporting public art projects that address local civic issues, and Philadelphia was featured as one of 17 finalists to receive up to $1 million as part of the Public Art Challenge.
The initiative is nationwide and awards cities grants of up to $1 million to develop a public art project that addresses a local civic issue.
Philadelphia’s proposal was a community-driven “Healing Verse Germantown” that aims to address gun violence with public art installations based on poems written in community workshops.
The city is on track to receive a Bloomberg Philanthropies grant to start developing its project starting in 2024.
The 10 winning cities will be announced in the fall.
