Governor extends state of emergency for gender violence

The Governor of Puerto Rico, Pedro R. Pierluisi, signed executive order OE-2023-020 that extends the validity of the state of emergency due to gender violence in Puerto Rico until December 31, 2023.

“With the state of emergency we have instituted transformations in the management of this social evil and its multiple manifestations. Such initiatives have been implemented and integrated as public policy in government agencies, and campaigns and other tools have been developed to educate for the prevention of gender violence. With the extension of this executive order, we want to give continuity to the efforts that are already in force, focused on orientation, education and transformation of social behavior, as well as the implementation of prevention programs throughout our government and the development of policy that promotes equity and respect for all human beings,” said Governor Pierluisi through the Executive Order.

The extension of said order, which establishes an emergency declaration for gender violence, allows to continue reviewing and establishing effective rehabilitation programs aimed at breaking the cycle of gender violence; transform and adopt the necessary and specific public policies for equity and respect among all human beings; strengthen the incorporation of municipal governments in a network of services and support for people in situations of gender violence and promote educational and media campaigns aimed at prevention. In addition, it intends to give continuity to the initiatives and projects started and implemented by the Committee for the Prevention, Support, Rescue and Education of Gender Violence.
