Philadelphia: Suspect Charged with Killing 5, Injuring 4

Kimbrady Carriker was indicted Wednesday on five counts of murder and was also charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, as well as possessing a weapon without a permit and carrying a weapon in public, prosecutors said.

A 2-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy were also injured by the shots; In addition, another 2-year-old baby and a woman were hit by broken glass in the Monday night attack in the Kingsessing area, the area where the most violence was recorded for the July 4 holiday for Independence Day.

Police officers who arrived at the scene found four gunshot victims and began to help them before hearing more gunshots. Some officers rushed the victims to hospitals while others ran to where the shots were heard and chased after the suspect.

Ernest Ransom, commander of the homicide unit, said witness interviews and video indicated the suspect went to various locations and was wearing a ski mask, bulletproof vest and an AR-15-style rifle.

Philadelphia police identified the victims as Lashyd Merritt, 20; Dymir Stanton, 29; Ralph Moralis, 59; and Daujan Brown, 15, all pronounced dead shortly after the Monday night shooting. Joseph Wamah Jr., 31, was found in a home early Tuesday morning, also with multiple gunshot wounds.

Investigators believe Wamah was the first victim, but his relatives didn’t find him for hours, Ransom said.

The wounded 2-year-old was shot four times in the legs and the 13-year-old was also shot twice in the legs. Both were in stable condition Wednesday, as were the 2-year-old boy and 33-year-old woman who were injured by broken glass.

It is unknown if Carriker has an attorney who can comment on his legal situation.
