Dortmund’s zoo fans had to say goodbye to some of their favorite animals in 2022. But there were also a lot of sweet offspring. The review.

The year 2022 is coming to an end – and like every year, it can Dortmund Zoo look back on many happy and a few sad events. After the long corona restrictions, almost all theme houses were open again in 2022. In the end, however, one was completely closed: the popular Amazonas house.

Here is our review of the Dortmund Zoo year 2022:

January 2022: On new pygmy slow lorikeet moves into the Dortmund Zoo. The offspring comes nameless from Antwerp to the Ruhr area – schoolgirl Marlene (11) is allowed to baptize the zoo newcomer:






January 2022: A new zoo resident gets a lot of attention: the newcomer Lion tomcat Boeti At the beginning of the year dares to approach the predator house – somewhat shyly he seeks contact with the sisters Saba and Zuri. For four years, the old house of predators had been converted into a pure lion house.


February 2022: After several storms, during which the zoo was closed for a week, the gates open again. At the same time, some also fall Corona lockdowns gone: Farm, otter, tamandua, giraffe and rhino house are finally reopening after months. However, the lion house, the Amazon house and the rainforest house remain closed:

April 2022: The zoo poached together with NABU five barn owls out. In a barn on the zoo grounds, the birds of prey were released into nature – well prepared for an independent life in the urban wilderness.

June 2022: Great news from them goliath herons. After loving hatching, the Dortmund heron pair has had offspring. With a wingspan of over two meters, the goliath heron is the largest of all herons. In Germany, this species is only kept in the Niendorf Bird Park.

June 2022: Farewell to a crowd favorite: dies at almost 28 years old Anteater Sandra in the Dortmund Zoo. The cozy animal with a long snout (nose?!) and a pointed tongue has far exceeded its life expectancy.

June 2022: A few days after the anteater Sandra dies with it Rhino grandma Natala another zoo favorite. At 53 years old, the white rhino was the oldest rhino in Europe and the fifth oldest in the world. Now only three rhinos live in Dortmund Zoo.

July 2022: First offspring for anaconda Josephine: The boa snake brings nine babies to the world. For the mother, which the zoo took over from the Munich reptile sanctuary in 2012, it is the first offspring – and for the Dortmund zoo it is also the first offspring of this animal species.

July 2022: For weeks, the Dortmund sloths lived hidden behind the scenes of the Tamandua house. When they can finally be seen again, they have offspring with them: Sloth Baby Fips, which Mama Hexe then carried through the enclosure for months. Fips was born in April.

August 2022: And again offspring in the Dortmund Zoo: Sumatran orangutan Suma has her first infant born. Her last pregnancy ended in a stillbirth that had to be delivered by caesarean section. Now the monkey is finally the mother of a daughter.

September 2022: Sad news for fans of special animals: Tapir Grandpa Kuni leaves the Dortmund Zoo. The grand seigneur is heading south in his old age. Female Sira, with whom Kuni is supposed to spend his tapir pension, is waiting at Saarbrücken Zoo.

November 2022: The worst news of the year comes at the end: Because of the high energy costs, it has to Closing the Amazon house at the end of the year. The house consumes a third of the zoo’s energy! The building is getting on in years anyway – in the long run a new one is needed. But that’s not going to happen that quickly. Therefore, 150 animals (from 35 animal species) have to move. Most come to other zoos, a few move within the Dortmund Zoo.
