Some photographers strive to show their motifs as close as possible to the original without intensive image processing. For others, on the other hand, only the image processing gets out of a photo what they imagined during the shot or what they want to express with their shot. This often results in a unique look that then runs through a series of images or can also be typical of a photographer – for example as a trademark.

This is how the typical Instagram look was created with the Instagram image platform. It was based on Polaroid photography, including the typical square image format. Even today, anyone who uploads a picture to Instagram can still access many ready-made looks if they want. However, very few take advantage of the opportunity.

If you look around the c’t photography gallery, you will notice that there are still a number of photographers who use their own looks to emphasize certain moods or statements. We selected some of them as pictures of the day last week, such as the lead picture Bleak prospects by Bernd Unger. He deliberately shifted the color temperature of his landscape shot towards yellow in order to depict his state of mind and to take the Pictorialism from the beginning of the last century as a model.

In his recording Hwy 3.0 Photographer Bartosz Zborala combines a low vantage point with a special look to suggest how far the bike lane stretches seemingly endlessly to the horizon, similar to highways in the US. The light points to the future and promises a change in the traffic infrastructure.

Wednesday’s picture of the day with the simple caption portrait by Reiner Weber only needs a little image processing for his 70s look. Because it is an almost 50-year-old analog photo on slide that he digitized with a film scanner and only had to rework slightly. Of course, the unusual lighting with two lamps contributes significantly to the effect of the picture.

Photographer ‘Der Onkel Werner’ follows the Polaroid look very closely with a series of pictures that he uploaded to the gallery. They all show everyday things that you can discover on every street corner with a keen eye. With this special image development, the seemingly insignificant motifs get something special and make you smile or think – just like the photo Erna, the chair is crookeda tribute to the humorist, actor and caricaturist Loriot.

highway 3.0

The picture Hwy 3.0 was created during a Sunday hike by Bartosz Zborala alias BAB on a bicycle road in the Ruhr area between Gelsenkirchen and Essen. Bartosz, who describes himself as a photography beginner, writes to us: “When you stand on this path and look into the distance, there seems to be no end, hence the title Highway. 3.0 and, because the Ruhr area is also increasingly changing allows for more cycling culture. Technically, I tried to get more depth into the image by shooting at ground level. In image processing, I tried to illuminate the wet road more to create a reflection effect. The rest should be dramatic through the darkness, but also appear clear.” (Image: Bartosz Zborala / BAB)
