He is Louis XV in “Jeanne du Barry” by Maïwenn, but he is also a director: Johnny Depp is back behind the camera. Twenty-five years after “The Brave”, the actor of “Pirates of the Caribbean” will direct “Modi”, a biopic of the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani, announces the magazine « Deadline ».

Based on a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for the screen by Jerzy and Mary Olson-Kromolowski, the feature film tells 48 tumultuous hours in the life of the painter and sculptor Modigliani, in 1916 in Paris, where he has lived since 1906. In the casting, three sizes of international cinema have been announced: the icon Al Pacino, the Italian star Riccardo Scamarcio and our national Pierre Niney. It is the Italian actor who will play Modigliani while Niney will play the French painter Maurice Utrillo and Al Pacino will be the great art collector Maurice Gangnat.

More than mixed reactions

On the networks, the French actor expressed his joy by writing: « One dream at a time ».

However, the reactions of Internet users to this message were more than mixed. In question, the trial for domestic violence which opposed Johnny Depp to Amber Heard, at the end of which the American actor was victorious, of course, but still found guilty of defamation and obliged to pay 2 million euros. Pierre Niney’s participation in this project led by a controversial personality, while he has always been committed to feminism and against domestic violence – notably by associating himself with Angèle in his feminist clip “Balance your what” – passes hardly.

The filming of “Modi” is scheduled for next fall, in Budapest.
