A pile-up involving hundreds of vehicles and one fatality broke out in central China today. Sudden fog led to the collision on a highway near Zhengzhou in Henan province, state broadcaster CCTV reported, citing local authorities. At least 200 vehicles had crashed into each other, according to the state media, and one person died as a result.

Aerial photos showed a number of cars, vans and trucks jammed in thick fog on the affected section of the motorway. Other videos online showed the battered remains of several vehicles that had crashed into each other.

Traffic accidents are common in China due to a lack of security checks. In September, 27 people died when the bus that was taking them to quarantine facilities in the southwest of the country overturned.
