Google is now attacking Samsung & Co in the middle class. The Google Pixel 7A is officially launched on the market today and, with a price starting at around 500 euros, is said to offer equipment that can almost keep up with the more expensive models in the Pixel 7 series.

The Pixel 7a features a 6.13-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels and a maximum refresh rate of 90 Hertz. The panel has relatively wide edges and a small hole for the eight-megapixel front camera. The overall package comes in a metal frame but has a plastic back cover, which is probably what Google is trying to do to keep costs down.

Same platform as in top models, modified cameras, high-quality housing

Under the hood is the Google Tensor G2 octa-core SoC, the same platform as last year’s flagship Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro models. There is always a full eight gigabytes of LPDDR5-based RAM on board and the internal flash memory is 128 or 256 GB in size. As is usual with Google products, an expansion of the memory is not planned.

When it comes to the cameras, Google has changed the setup compared to the more expensive Pixel 7 models and is now installing a main sensor with 64 megapixels and an F/1.8 aperture, which is paired with an ultra wide-angle camera with 13 megapixels. The US technology group has left out an optical image stabilizer in its cheaper new smartphone, but it should offer a few tricks with regard to the software in order to still deliver good photos.
Google Pixel 7aIn many countries, the Pixel Buds A are available free of charge with the Pixel 7A at launch

The battery of the Pixel 7a is 4385mAh and can be charged quickly using a USB Type-C power adapter with a maximum of 20 watts – but this is not included. The Pixel 7a runs Android 13 in what is probably the purest form that the operating system manufacturer wants it to have. However, the update to Android 14 shouldn’t be long in coming, after all the new version is about to be completed.

The Google Pixel 7a can already be ordered from today and should also be available at short notice. Depending on their region, buyers may receive a free pair of Google Pixel Buds A-Series wireless earbuds with purchase, or other discounts or credits. There is a relatively wide range of colors, because Google offers the Pixel 7a in grey, white, blue and, exclusively via its own store, also in “coral”.
