Bethesda and Microsoft are facing a mini shitstorm. As the Redfall developers have announced, the new open-world shooter will initially be released for the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles without a performance mode and will therefore be limited to 30 FPS.

Anyone who collects more comments than likes on Twitter usually faces a big problem. An even more manageable one is currently moving Shitstorm on the console version of Redfall after Arkane Studios confirmed that it would only have a “Quality Mode” at release. Although high resolutions, ray tracing, HDR10 and Co. can inspire gamers, there is a downside that becomes a knockout criterion for shooter fans.

“30 FPS in a shooter? Are you kidding me?”

Redfall should be displayed on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S in native 4K or 1440p resolution, but it will be limited to 30 FPS. A so-called “Performance Mode”, which reduces the resolution and graphics quality but offers 60 FPS, will only be provided at a later date. PC players, on the other hand, will probably not have to fear any restrictions.

The announcement annoyed Xbox players mainly because the Bethesda and Microsoft subsidiary could not meet the planned release in summer 2022 and is now starting with a possibly half-baked game on May 2nd, 2023.

The 30 FPS limit that lasts for weeks or even months is just the tip of the iceberg. In the run-up, interested players have already criticized Redfall’s online compulsion in single-player mode and the poor implementation of the co-op mode. The latter relies on a “host progression only” model, whereby the story progression in the game is only saved for the group leader, but not for his fellow players. If they are traveling alone in the meantime, all missions must be repeated.

Redfall will be available in early May for Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC, and will also be part of Xbox Game Pass. Individual purchases can be pre-ordered from EUR 79.99.
