Plan to build a soccer stadium in Queens advances

The proposal to build a football stadium and new affordable housing units next to Citi Field made significant progress this week.

Queens Community Board 7 voted Monday night in favor of the proposed development at Willets Point.

The plan includes the construction of a soccer stadium for the New York City Fútbol Club team that will cost $780 million, with capacity for 25,000 fans.

The Project also includes the construction of 2,500 units of affordable housing, a new public school, a hotel, shops and an outdoor park.

The plan must now be approved by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards. It will then go to the city Planning Commission for review and finally to the mayor.
