Several environmental protection organizations and the Berlin Museum of Natural History joined forces on Friday in a new water protection alliance. According to its own statements, the “Berlin Water Network” wants to work on improving the quality of the groundwater and watercourses in Berlin. The state associations of BUND and Nabu and the Berlin State Working Group on Nature Conservation (BLN) are also involved in the alliance.

The water network is the answer to one increasing water and biodiversity crisis in Berlin, the alliance announced. Together with the authorities and residents, it wants to plant riparian trees and unseal areas, offer water quality workshops and build up political pressure.

According to the Lotto Foundation Berlin, the water network is funded. The alliance emerged from an earlier joint project last year. (dpa)
