A week ago, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s (M) state secretary PM Nilsson was fined after poached eel in the Blekinge archipelago in 2021.

Now he announces via a post on Facebook that he is leaving his job as state secretary and states that he “understands the inappropriateness” of it all.

Knutson: A big loss of prestige for Kristersson

According to SVT’s domestic political commentator Mats Knutson, the departure is basically about the illegal poaching. He also allegedly lied to both the sea and water authority and the police when he was then caught red-handed.

It has also emerged later that Nilsson is reported for species protection offences, which is being investigated by the police’s special department Noa. In his Facebook post, however, Nilsson writes that he does not know what it is about or whether it is he “who is the subject of the investigation” as he does not receive information from the police.

– All of this together means that Ulf Kristersson, and PM Nilsson himself, make the assessment that it is unsustainable for him to act as state secretary for Ulf Kristersson, says Mats Knutson in SVT Current.

Knutson also believes that with tonight’s announcement, Kristersson “admits that the recruitment was a mistake”.

– It means a big loss of prestige for Ulf Kristersson and that this deal comes to an end, he says.

Kristersson: Sad – but understand the decision

In an SMS to SVT, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) describes the situation as boring:

“PM Nilsson has decided to leave his position as State Secretary in the State Council Committee. Of course, I find it sad that this situation has arisen, but I understand his decision. PM Nilsson has been a valued employee in the team and is a very competent person. We will miss him.”
