Xavier Yvon : In La Loupe, there are files that we like to follow. One of them concerns all the techniques that reduce the impact of our carbon emissions. A few months ago, Sébastien Julian, the head of the Climate section of L’Express, told us about a revolutionary technology whose name can be summed up in three letters: CCS. Listen to this excerpt that I took out of La Loupe’s closet:
Sebastian Julian : “The CO2 is first sucked up by fans. It then passes through a filter where it is trapped. It must then be stored, otherwise the capture is of little interest. The idea is to permanently remove CO2, which is excess in the atmosphere and contributes to climate change.”
Xavier Yvon : This CCS, like “Carbon capture and storage” – or capture and storage of carbon, in good French – could help us to fight against global warming. The problem is that, so far, these techniques are still extremely expensive:
Sebastian Julian : “It is expensive to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, then store it. For the moment, there is no economic model, it does not exist. In fact, there will be a lot of economic equations to solve and for the moment, we don’t really have any ideas on that.”
Xavier Yvon : If I’m talking about it again today, it’s because these “economic equations” could be solved more quickly than expected. Total, Shell, ExxonMobil… The major oil groups are taking a close interest in these new CCS techniques and even hope to become the champions of the sector. So, can we really outsource, without risk, part of our energy transition to these champions of fossil fuels? This is the question we go to La Loupe in this episode.
