Guatemala. At seven in the morning in Guatemala, the voting booths for the second electoral round were opened. With a register of more than 9 million 361 thousand registered, the next government of this country will be decided between the candidate Bernardo Arévalo, of the Movimiento Semilla party, and Sandra Torres, of the National Unity of Hope.

Two months ago, during the first round, Arévalo came to cast his vote at the La Patria school booth, Zone 2 of this capital, accompanied by his family and just a couple of journalists. Today, at 9:13 in the morning, all the radio stations in the country broadcast in detail and step by step the arrival of the leading candidate at his polling place, in the midst of a disorderly swarm of more than 100 journalists and a small team of Security totally exceeded.

“That he already signed, that they already gave him his ballot, that he already took his crayon and marked his vote, that he leaves the box”, the announcers vociferated.

“We are hopeful for the first time. This Bernardo looks different from all the bad presidents we’ve had,” says Miguel Ángel Hernández, a 40-year-old taxi driver who has always gone to the polls since I was old enough to vote.

In the course of the last few weeks, Arévalo, a little-known politician far from the crowds, has become the man in the news and the favorite to win, according to all the polls, without exception.

“We are living in a historic moment to consolidate a future of democratic life for,” Arévalo declared as he left his polling station.

A few minutes later, her opponent Sandra Torres voted in a gym. Journalistic coverage was much less.

It is expected that today at nine o’clock at night the first results of these elections will be obtained.
