“NoIn the context of cloud computing, Portugal is well integrated into international trends, with a set of small secondary operators, although without the detailed knowledge of the world’s major providers, making it important to implement international recommendations and regulations”, reads the conclusions of the ‘Emerging Technologies’ report by the National Center for Cybersecurity Observatory.

The document aims to raise issues associated with cybersecurity in emerging technologies, “bearing in mind that the development of new systems and devices does not always consider cybersecurity in its design”.

Presenting “an overview of five technologies that shape the technological present and future: cloud computing, the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), 5G mobile technology and quantum technologies”, the report anticipates “its expected future impact” and highlights the cybersecurity aspects that must be considered.

The report recommends that “the best software development practices within the scope of IoT” be promoted, through dedicated programs, the creation of communities of cybersecurity professionals and the implementation of certification processes.

It highlights the importance of strict compliance with the General Regulation on Data Protection (GDPR) in the context of AI, stressing “the relevance of its regulation for the attribution of responsibilities in the event of a breach of privacy and security”.

At the same time, “and given the inherent opacity of technology, it is concluded that a risk-based approach is crucial, in the context of organizational security”, he warns.

“The integration of these three technologies is facilitated by 5G, which shows the importance of its permanent availability: The inclusion of AI mechanisms and cloud computing make it possible to automate aspects of operation and optimization of those networks, but raises concerns in terms of transparency in the obtaining and using the data”, he adds.

The report’s conclusions state that, “sustaining, but also threatening”, all these technologies is quantum computing, in which Portugal has presented good results in terms of innovation.

However, the authors of the document call for “an urgent critical analysis of the protocols used in authentication services and digital signatures and the need for progressive use of quantum networks for key distribution”.

According to the Observatory, this study’s target audience is the various professionals in the sector, but also all those interested in having a first approach to these themes, adding that reading the document can be useful to support the design of safe strategies in the adoption of technologies under consideration.

The CNCS Cybersecurity Observatory annually publishes several reports, studies, surveys and bulletins that seek to share knowledge about the phenomenon of cybersecurity from a multidisciplinary perspective, in order to support the development of public policies and promote knowledge about this topic among the community.
