Powerball lottery jackpot rises to $1.23 billion

MONKS.- The Powerball lottery jackpot reached an estimated $1.23 billion on Wednesday after another drawing without a winning jackpot ticket.

The winning combination was 11, 38, 41, 62, 65 and the Powerball 15.

The prize, now the eighth largest in U.S. lottery history, has been rising for more than three months, a reflection of the low odds — one in 292.2 million — of winning the top prize. Since the last jackpot was awarded on January 1, 40 consecutive drawings have been held without anyone matching the six winning numbers.

According to those responsible for the lottery, thousands of people have won lower prizes ranging between two dollars and two million.

The 1,230 million jackpot is for a single winner who decides to collect it in 30 annual payments. Most of the winners prefer payment in cash, which for Saturday’s draw is estimated at 595.1 million.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
