Prague
Prague is currently offering visitors a rare highlight: the city has taken its crown jewels out of the treasury. If you want to admire them, you only have until Saturday.

The rare display of the crown jewels of the former Kingdom of Bohemia has begun in Prague with a large crowd of visitors. Many people waited in line for more than an hour in front of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle to admire the original 14th-century Wenceslas Crown, scepter and orb.

The glittering insignia of power can only be seen until Saturday (January 21) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Then they disappear again in an inaccessible treasure chamber.

Seven high dignitaries, who traditionally keep the keys, came together to retrieve the precious pieces: President Milos Zeman, Prime Minister Petr Fiala, the chairmen of the two chambers of parliament, the archbishop and canon and the Lord Mayor of Prague.

Establishment of the Czech Republic 30 years ago

There are strict safety precautions. In addition to police officers, soldiers from the castle guard are also on duty. Admission is free. The treasure was last shown in 2018. The celebratory occasion this time is the founding of the Czech Republic 30 years ago with the division of Czechoslovakia into two states.

The exhibition of the Crown Jewels as a symbol of statehood will take place between the first and second round of the presidential elections in the Czech Republic. The general a. D. Petr Pavel and ex-Prime Minister Andrej Babis will meet in a run-off election on January 27th and 28th.
